Our Creative Process

1The Red Orange process normally begins with a conversation. This conversation occurs between the creative director and the team in need of a design solution. In this conversation we carefully examine the problem or task at hand. What are our clients’ needs? Are they a start-up company in need of a logo design and branding development? Are they a growing business that needs to update their website so their web presence can match their professional success? Or do they have an upcoming event that needs to be marketed effectively through a combination of web and print media? Whatever the design need, it is essential to discover all the variables involved before exploration commences so that we can find a successful direction for the project. The amount of time spent on this phase is usually proportional to the overall scope and planned duration of the project.

Here are some areas we focus on during the discovery phase:

  • Hierarchy — what message is most important to relay visually?
  • Purpose — what is the purpose of this project?
  • Preferences — what are the client’s likes/dislikes, and what has or hasn’t worked for them in the past?

2This next step involves looking at pre-existing ideas and executions created by peers, mentors, heroes, and/or competitors. Competitive analysis identifies the strengths and weaknesses of those existing designs. When performing this research we reveal gaps which still need to be filled and shortcomings which should be met through the design solution(s) we offer to our client. The ability to study what others have designed for the same (or similar) problem lends a sizable advantage, since a great deal can be learned from their successes and failures.

3When tackling a design project with limitless creative boundaries, we like to begin by focusing on relevant words, topics, and phrases that we’ve gathered from our Discovery and Research phases. We then brainstorm different ways to visually communicate and emphasize words or ideas. Through this brainstorming process we gain a broadened perspective of the problem we are trying to solve, and often uncover additional ideas and concepts which were not so obvious at the outset.

Sketching is the part of the process where we start putting our thoughts and ideas onto paper. Sometimes this begins with drawing 30-second thumbnail sketches on paper, and often times we begin by laying out design ideas in the computer. We can often come up with dozens of variations, but before sending any of these sketches to the client for review, we will narrow it down to just a few, with each variation focused on a separate concept.

4After the client reviews our initial designs & concepts, we then begin to implement the designs the client favors into the media we are using to solve their initial need. This step may involve several communications back and forth between the designer and the client to ensure that the end result is the best solution for the client’s need.

5After the design has been finalized and approved by the client, we provide the client with the digital files required to print or to publish to the web. Most often the client gives us the necessary information to publish the website to their domain. For printed materials we have several printers that we have relationships with that print high quality products and have some of the best prices. We can handle a part or all of the print process as requested.
