In summer of 2024, we welcomed our newest intern Dejanique Powell to the Red Orange team. As a fine arts major with a concentration in graphic design at Norfolk State University, she came in excited to expand her design portfolio and eager to pick our designers’ brains.

Working with the Red Orange Team

She worked closely with senior designer, Alison Robertson who quickly became her go-to and mentor throughout her time at Red Orange. In addition, she had the opportunity to learn from Lauryn Fauntroy who was our first intern through the HBCU Internship Program in 2021.

One thing Dejanique appreciated about working with Red Orange was the welcoming environment.

“I loved how personable everyone was and valued getting to know each team member individually. Although most of my work was done virtually, I felt I had many great opportunities to learn each team member’s unique work process through one-on-one meetings and team-building events.”

Growing Her Design Portfolio

During her time as an RO intern, Dejanique’s favorite project was designing Virginia Voice’s new logo. As the recipient of our 2024 PIP Nonprofit Award, Virginia Voice was selected to receive a new logo. She was able to witness the process from the initial discovery call with the client to the delivery of the final product. She avidly took notes on client meetings, gained knowledge and practice with typography and logo lockups, and contributed ideas during internal meetings.

Aside from this project, Dejanique learned many other skills that will prove useful in her future career. She explored new design software such as Adobe Indesign and Abobe XD, learned specific skills including how to create mockups and export logo files, and was introduced to the social media content marketing process. In fact, Dejanique had the opportunity to teach some of her skills to our team members as well by delivering an educational moment on using CapCut video editor to create engaging reels.

Aside from developing practical skills, Dejanique learned how to conduct herself in professional conversations, listen to understand client’s needs, and effectively receive feedback. Ultimately, she has gained clarity on her desire to work as a designer in a corporate setting. Her time at RO has led her to become specifically interested in logo design and social media marketing. She’s fascinated by the process of brand strategy, brand awareness and marketing.

“If I were to give advice to future interns, I’d tell them to ask as many questions as possible. No one expects you to know everything! Also, be open to working with others and learning processes that are different than your own.”

We are so grateful to have had Dejanique as part of our team this summer! Learn more about our HBCU Internship here.
