Sentara Stroke
Every 40 seconds someone has a stroke. In Southeastern, US, known as the “Stroke Belt,” fatal strokes are much more prevalent. As part of their mission to improve health every day, Sentara Healthcare wanted to educate the community about their risk for stroke and provide resources for life after a stroke with a multi-media campaign.

Collaborative Approach
Stroke survivors have special requirements when it comes to reading or watching educational videos online. To accommodate to their needs, the Red Orange team worked closely with the brand engagement team at Sentara and the clinical representatives to develop content that is patient appropriate and ADA compliant. Together, we created an internationally award-winning video-centric resource for stroke survivors that serves as the hub for all Sentara stroke materials. These easily digestible videos explain facts about stroke and tips for living well after a stroke.
Solution
As part of Stroke Awareness Month in May, we launched the “Know Your Risk” campaign featuring a dedicated microsite with an online quiz that helps users self-identify their level of risk for stroke. The quiz serves as the primary call to action for all elements of the campaign – from digital ads to infographic decals that were displayed throughout the 12 hospitals in the Sentara Healthcare network. Patient stories featured on the site tell the human stories of recovery and survival, while practical tips and recipes provide valuable tools for stroke patients and their families.
To further extend the reach of their campaign, Sentara also engaged Red Orange to create fresh and innovative print and video resources within an educational toolkit in partnership with the American Stroke Association and the Virginia Beach City Public Schools. Teachers throughout the city are using the toolkit to educate students – and their parents – about signs and symptoms of stroke as well as how to respond when someone has a stroke. This Stroke Education Toolkit includes interactive PowerPoint presentations for both educators and students, a custom-designed emblem, instructional handouts, and testing materials.
Outcome
The Sentara Stroke Education site website gave healthcare providers another way to connect with and offer additional resources to the community. As 795,000 people across the country suffer a stroke each year, these online educational tools equip stroke survivors and those at risk of stroke with the means to be proactive with their health and help lower the annual stroke rate as much as possible. Visitors to the Sentara Stroke Awareness website who take the online assessment quiz and are identified as “high risk for stroke” are directed to the Sentara website where they are encouraged to find a local physician.
